A continental roadshow has been planned in order to create awareness of the new DotAfrica top-level internet domain, which was officially launched in July this year with the backing of the African Union and member states. The roadshow, which will begin early in the new year, will start off in Botwana and pass through numerous African countries in order to spread the word about DotAfrica, ending at the top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

The new dotAfrica internet domain continues to attract interest, with thousands registrations taking place for the top-level domain. The dotAfrica top-level internet domain attracted over 8,000 registrations since its launch in July this year, displaying a popularity for the domain among businesses, organisations and individuals, with brands such as banks and media companies ensuring that they captured a domain for themselves.

The new dotAafrca top-level internet domain appears to be very popular among trademark owners, as it has attracted just short of a thousand registrations during the initial registrations period, known as the sunrise phase. The top-level domain has been through its sunrise phase, is now in its landrush phase, and will be available to the general public from July 4, but already dotAfrica is showing why it has been much-anticipated. The heavy initial interest in the dotAfrica domain places it in the top 10 worldwide for the number of domain name reservations during the sunrise phase of a launch process.

After years of red tape, the much-hyped DotAfrica domain will soon be available to the public. The psychological impact cannot be underestimated, said Lucky Masilela, CEO of the ZA Central Registry — the company charged in 2012 with giving Africa its own first geographic TLD. DotAfrica is not just about African pride. It’s about business. “We believe that it will increasingly make an appearance in corporate marketing communication with all the associated benefits including feet in stores and clicks on sites,” Masilela said.
