Africa loves sport, and the popularity of numerous top sports such as soccer, rugby and cricket has inevitably attracted tech companies that are interested in funding sport in the form of sponsorship deals to be associated with the various teams, competitions and players. Numerous global and local tech brands benefit from this, while the sports themselves require the finances provided by these deals to survive and thrive.

Telecommunications giant Orange has concluded a new long-term partnership deal as official sponsors for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) flagship competition. The new eight-year deal will see the France-based company confirmed as an official sponsor of five major CAF competitions from 2017 to 2024, beginning with the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon this January.

South African telecommunications provider Telkom has been unveiled as the country’s major Olympic sponsor for the upcoming 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Telkom’s association with the team of athletes that will represent the country in Brazil was announced by the South Africans Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee this week.

Cricket is incredibly popular in South Africa, and a sponsorship of the national teams is valuable for the bank, which operates throughout the African continent.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that they have managed to secured a three-year sponsorship of 2.1 million cedis (603,000 U.S. dollars) from GN Bank on behalf of the second-tier league. Sony helped produce “One Love, One Rhythm,” the official album of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. It includes anthems for the tournaments and has sold thousands of copies. Sony took sponsorship in a charitable direction, creating programs in Côte d’Ivoire to promote the tournament. Public viewings of games (on Sony equipment, of course) are being held in major cities around Côte d’Ivoire, and Sony organized friendly football matches of multi-ethnic teams to promote understanding.
