    The Federal Government says it is embarking on Smart City project in order to leverage on technology solutions to improve efficiency of cities across the country. The minister of communication Adebayo Shittu disclosed this at the opening ceremony of the Smart Cities Nigeria Summit yesterday in Abuja. The minister said the with the development of new technological innovations–mainly ICTs–the concept of the “Smart City” has emerged as a means to achieve more efficient and sustainable cities.

    Construction has begun on a Chinese-financed R84-billion ($7.24 billion) city in Modderfontein, eastern Johannesburg, The Star reported last week. Chinese firm Shanghai Zendai planned to develop the 1,600 hectares of land into the “New York of Africa”, Dai Zhikang, the company’s founder and chairman, said at a press conference in November 2013.

    A Hong Kong company providing technology and telecoms services for Africa’s first ever “smart city” project in Johannesburg has quietly been building up a client base across the continent. On Tuesday, PCCW Global announced that it has inked a deal with Chinese urban developer Shanghai Zendai to provide telecoms and tech services for an R84 billion Zendai smart city project in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa.
