Africa loves sport, and the popularity of numerous top sports such as soccer, rugby and cricket has inevitably attracted tech companies that are interested in funding sport in the form of sponsorship deals to be associated with the various teams, competitions and players. Numerous global and local tech brands benefit from this, while the sports themselves require the finances provided by these deals to survive and thrive.

South African rugby team coach Allister Coetzee is currently in search of the next captain that will lead the Springboks in this year’s list of fixtures, with previous skipper Adriaan Strauss having retired at the end of last year. Strauss captained the Boks during Coetzee’s first year in charge, but soon after he was appointed he made it known that he would retire from international rugby at the end of the season. His coach therefore had a great deal of time to consider his successor.

Allister Coetzee has been confirmed as Springbok coach despite a terrible 2016 season which prompted fans and rugby stakeholders in South Africa alike to call for him to be removed from the post. The Springboks have always been a force in world rugby, but last year saw the team struggle to replicate their usual good form against top sides. Coetzee survived a review to keep his job as coach of the side despite a terrible first season in charge in which the Springboks experienced a number of embarrassing losses while looking out of sorts at times.

Springbok rugby legend Joost van der Westhuizen passed away on Monday after struggling with with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) since his diagnosis in 2011. He was only 45. Van der Westhuizen was a multiple record holder during his time as a player for numerous famed Springbok teams and his beloved Blue Bulls franchise. At a time he was the most-capped Springbok with 89 tests and record try scorer with 38 tries for the South Africans.

South Africa’s Springbok Sevens side were crowned the Emirates Airline Dubai Seven winners with a deserved 26-14 victory over Olympic and World Series champions Fiji in the final over the weekend. The Springboks have endured a disappointing season on the world stage, but the sevens side remains a point of pride, with the Olympic bronze medallists consistently performing to a high standard.

The South African national rugby squad, known as the Springboks, are in Europe for a tour that will include four test matches during the month of November. They will be playing games against England, Wales and Italy, as well as an opening test against the Barbarians this coming Saturday.

The Springbok sevens rugby preliminary squad for the 2016 Olympics has been named by coach Neil Powell, with the 19 players selected preparing for the games in Brazil during the month of August. Rio 2016 is the first Olympic games to feature rugby sevens as one of the sports on offer, and the South Africans are set to be amongst the teams fighting for medals in Brazil.

Springboks captain Jean De Villiers and the Springboks won every game Nelson Mandela attended. Mandela attended five or six games during de Villier’s career. De Villier said he attributes the wins to Mandela’s aura — one that brought out the best in people.
