South African star athlete Wayde van Niekerk has received a special recognition from the Association of National Olympic Committees (Anoc) for his spectacular performance at the Rio Olympic Games in August. The 24-year-old’s incredible athletic performance, which saw him clocking a time of 43.03 seconds to win gold and set a 400m world record at the quadrennial spectacle.

Feyisa Lilesa won an Olympic medal in Rio, but crossed the finish line with his arms raised in protest against the Ethiopian government. Given the Ethiopian government’s history of imprisoning political protesters, Lilesa is afraid to return home. He believes he will be killed or imprisoned if he does. Team South Africa returned to Johannesburg from Brazil on Tuesday morning, fresh from their 10-medal winning exploits at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and they were met at OR Tambo International by thousands of fans who had packed the airport to welcome them home. The 137 athletes who represented South Africa at the Games returned home with 10 medals; two gold, six silver and two bronze.

Athletes from countries all over Africa put in fantastic performances during the Games, clocking fast times, winning gold medals and achieving firsts for nations and the continent. Here are 12 Olympic records and milestones set by Africans in Rio.

South African athlete Caster Semenya lived up to her 2016 Olympic Games potential by winning the women’s 800m final in Rio to earn South Africa’s second gold medal of the competition, and Team SA’s tenth in total. In doing so, Semenya broke the South African national 800m record on Saturday night with a calculated run that saw her winning it with her final 300m sprint to move comfortably ahead of her competitors.

Caster Semenya, 25, won Olympic gold in the 800 meters as expected, but all anyone wanted to talk about was gender. Semenya was subjected to gender testing, sidelined for 11 months and eventually allowed to compete in 2010. She has been diagnosed with hyperandrogenism — testosterone levels that exceed the majority of women. New regulations in 2011 required female athletes to take testosterone-lowering medication if their natural levels are above a certain point. The rules were suspended in July 2015 for two years.

Thursday was a good day for Team South Africa and their 10-medal objective at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, as two more South Africans earned medals, bringing the country’s tally thus far to nine. Prior to Rio 2016, which has been ongoing for the last two weeks, South Africa’s Olympic committee mentioned that Team SA would travel to Brazil with the task of returning home with a record medal haul in tow.
