Informal transactions through Facebook groups are threatening the success of e-commerce giants in Africa according to a recent straw poll on the impact of the Black Friday sale promotion on this fledgling industry. According to a Geopoll Black Friday Straw Poll, which ran in December 2017 among 2,031 respondents in Nigeria, South Africa, and Kenya, Jumia still remains the most preferred e-commerce vendor.

E-commerce giant Jumia have expanded their online small business loans program to more markets across the African continent. Jumia, Africa’s first startup unicorn, has extended the program they launched in May, providing the small scale loans to merchants in all of the African countries in which it operates. Jumia has partnered with San Francisco-based mobile lender Branch to provide the loans to vendors, with the program proving successful in Kenya since May.

Safaricom, the world’s biggest mobile money operator, is set to launch an e-commerce platform in October that will be focused on supporting and enabling small businesses to sell their products online. The aim of Masoko, as the e-commerce platform will be called, will be to give small and micro businesses access to markets that they would otherwise be unable to reach with their products.

Proponents of the sharing economy say Uber and Airbnb benefit Africa, but who exactly is benefiting? They’re inserting themselves into existing informal sharing dynamics, acting as corporate middlemen and disrupting existing livelihoods. Underdeveloped formal sectors and high unemployment in Africa created the sharing economy out of necessity. Uber and Airbnb are taking a share of the profits.

Jumia, one of Africa’s fastest growing e-commerce platforms, has partnered with international credit card company Mastercard to make secure and convenient cashless e-commerce a reality in Africa. Africa’s e-commerce industry is experiencing a growth spurt in recent years, and online retailers across the continent are looking to find ways to attract new customers. Nigeria-based Jumia, one of Africa’s most popular online stores, believes that building trust and delivering a better customer experience will accelerate the growth that has been experienced thus far.

Despite the hype, profitability is still an unattainable ideal for Nigerian online shopping giants Konga and Jumia. Believers say e-commerce in Africa is “absolutely a long-term play.” They expect the short- and medium-term to be challenging. Players are still working on fast and easy payments and refunds, and trouble-free deliveries and returns. “It takes a long time for consumers to become comfortable shopping online, and it’s hard and expensive to accelerate this,” a stakeholder said. Investors aren’t all put off though. The potential prizes are too great.

E-commerce in Africa is a very long-term play indeed. Aside from issues with logistics, there are also problems with online payments, which still suffer from a lack of trust, and the sheer fact Africans still prefer to shop online. Moreover, fewer than 30 per cent of Africans have internet access. The Nigerian e-commerce powerhouses, however, have their eyes on a far greater prize, and are prepared to stomach losses for a number of years.

Africa Internet Group (AIG), a subsidiary of Rocket Internet, is renaming its companies in the African market to become part of one huge Jumia brand. This means all startups under AIG are undergoing some form of rebranding or the other. Basically, their names are going to be changed to Jumia-something. Jovago will become Jumia Travel, Lamudi will be Jumia House, HelloFood is morphing into Jumia Food, Carmudi will be Jumia Cars, Vendito will become Jumia Deals, and Everjobs will be known as Jumia Jobs.

Before there was any other e-commerce site in Nigeria, there was Konga.com. Initially the site only served as a Lagos-only online retailer and focused on merchandise in the baby and beauty care categories, but later broadened its scope to all of Nigeria from December 2012, before gradually expanding the variety of products sold via the platform.
