The biggest data center in Africa is nearing completion in South Africa, and will officially be launched at full capacity by November. Teraco’s Riverfields hyperscale data center facility is one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and is definitely the biggest on African soil, with a capacity of 24 megawatts and a build cost of $100 million. Already 25 percent full due to pre-bookings, Teraco is responding to demand.

Global management consulting and professional services firm Accenture has opened a new innovation studio in South Africa, selecting Johannesburg as the venue that will see disruptive technologies used for the benefit of businesses. The studio will make disruptive technologies, such as mixed reality, artificial intelligence, blockchain and cloud architectures, available for clients to experiment with, while it will also work with Accenture Labs.

U.S. software giant Microsoft has announced plans to open two new cloud data centers in South Africa, in order to provide Microsoft Cloud services for the African market from centers based on the continent. These hyperscale data centers will be built in Cape Town and Johannesburg, representing a strategic advantage for Microsoft, as they will be the only top-tier cloud provider with a data center presence in Africa. With availability of cloud services expected in 2018, the services that will be delivered via the two South African data centers will include Microsoft Azure, Office 365, and Dynamics 365.

One of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers, U.S.-based Boeing ranked No. 2 among defense contractor in the world in 2016. Boeing Defense does business with countries across Africa in security including surveillance drones. “The aerospace industry needs to start paying closer attention to Africa, because this continent is clearly on the move economically and all the trends are pointing in the right direction for the expansion of the sector,” a Boeing stakeholder said. Boeing hopes its two new African offices will be positioned to meet an anticipated demand of 1,150 new aircraft in Africa by 2035.

South African commercial property continues to present attractive investment opportunities to discerning investors, despite challenging economic conditions. There’s appetite for regional and super-regional malls, which enjoyed low vacancy rates in 2016 — 3 percent and 2 percent respectively — painting a positive picture of the economy. Johannesburg’s office market is a different story.

Bids from other consortiums including one led by South Africa’s Public Investment Corporation and Dubai-based Abraaj Group haven’t materialized. The Barclays Africa stake that is for sale is valued at about $4.3 billion. South Africa’s PIC manages pensions for government employees and is Africa’s largest money manager with about $13.5 billion in assets. In May it said it’s forming a group of black investors to ensure Barclays Africa remains in local hands.
