Facebook hosted a Women in Tech event and a Developer Circles Masterclass in Nairobi, Kenya. Bringing together the Developer Circle in Nairobi for an evening of networking, Facebook also hosted a Developer Masterclass with 25 Developer Circle leads from across Africa, in an intensive, three-day training course. Exploring Facebook technologies and platform products aimed at enhancing the ecosystem, both events brought together developers to connect, share ideas, learn, and collaborate.

Social media giant, Facebook, announced on September 6, 2017, that the company has begun the roll-out of Developer Circles in South African cities; Durban, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria. The project, which was launched at Facebooks Developer Conference (F8) in April 2017, now comprises of over 70 initiatives around the world, the four South African circles join other African countries in Cairo, Casablanca, Dakar, Harare, Lagos, Nairobi and Tunis.

When it comes to selling advertising in Africa, Facebook is a newcomer. It still has a learning curve on how to do more business on the continent. A year after opening its first African office, the social media network has grown 18% in Kenya, 16% in South Africa, and 6% in Nigeria. That sounds like a lot, but it may not be fast enough for Facebook. A soon-to-be-launched Facebook satellite will allow more Africans to connect to the Internet, “not at the (current) rate, but we need to fast forward the rate people are connecting,” said Facebook Africa head Nunu Ntshingila.
