South Africa and Russia have reportedly signed a cybersecurity cooperation agreement that will see the two BRICS nations working closer together in an effort to strengthen their defenses against cyber threats. The deal was officially signed at the BRICS summit in Xiamen, with high level diplomats from both countries, Sergey Lavrov of Russia and Maite Nkoana-Mashsbane of South Africa, putting pen to paper on the agreement.

South African food giant Pioneer said the deal would have created Africa’s largest consumer goods company. The deal was 95 percent finalized when the country’s foreign-currency debt was downgraded to junk by S&P and Fitch. The downgrade followed Zuma’s cabinet reshuffle and removal of Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan. It’s not clear what impact the downgrade will have on M&A in South Africa. With economic conditions expected to worsen, companies could struggle and could go through a period of distressed sales.

Telecommunications giant Orange has concluded a new long-term partnership deal as official sponsors for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) flagship competition. The new eight-year deal will see the France-based company confirmed as an official sponsor of five major CAF competitions from 2017 to 2024, beginning with the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon this January.

Yaya Toure’s outspoken agent Dimitri Seluk has threatened English Premier League club Manchester City, saying that he will buy his client out of his contract in order to leave and play for another club, if the Ivorian is not offered an extension to his current contract.

Mired in an energy crisis, South Africa signed a controversial agreement with Russia in September to talk about building 9,600-megawatts of new nuclear energy. Nuclear “is a dying industry and there are just too many unanswered questions for South Africa to go down this path,” said a Russian environmental activist visiting SA to talk about the deal. The country should look instead to renewable energy, he said.

Ghanaian midfielder Jordan Ayew has been signed by English Premier League team Aston Villa on a long-term deal from French Ligue 1 side Lorient. The 23-year-old Ghana international completed his move to the English club this week, signing a five-year deal that will keep him at Villa Park until 2020.

Ghana international Asamoah Gyan had kind words for former employers Al Ain as he departed the United Arab Emirates on his way to join Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG. On Wednesday the striker was in China to complete a medical and finalise the details concerning his deal with the Shanghai club.

Ghanaian striker Christian Atsu has completed his one-year loan deal for Bournemouth from Chelsea, after his loan to Everton ended. The attacker disappointed at the Merseyside club during the recently ended campaign, only registering a handful of appearances for Everton this season, as he struggled to break into the side following his loan move from Chelsea.

Liverpool’s Ivorian defender Kolo Toure has revealed that he is in talks with his Merseyside club to extend his contract and remain attached to the English Premier League side. His current deal at the club expires in a few weeks, and he is looking to extend so that he can be sure of his future at the Reds.
