Englishman Stuart Baxter seems set to be officially confirmed as the new South African national soccer team coach, having agreed to terms with the country’s soccer authorities in what will be a return for the SuperSport United manager. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that the 63-year-old has concluded a deal to coach Bafana Bafana, and all that remains is for the confirmation to be made public via the media.

South Africa’s 3-1 win over Guinea-Bissau in a friendly international on Saturday in Durban came with a price as four Bafana Bafana players are doubtful for the friendly encounter against Angola on Tuesday through injury. Defenders Erick Mathoho and Thulani Hlatshwayo, as well midfielders Dean Furman and Andile Jali are being monitored by the national team’s medical staff. The quartet missed Bafana’s first training session at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on Sunday night, and will need to be closely monitored before a decision on their availability is made.

South African 19-year-old Luther Singh has been given a chance to shine for his national team after receiving a call-up to represent Bafana Bafana in upcoming friendly international matches this month. Singh, a star player with the under-20 side that reached the semi-finals of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia earlier this month, has been drafted into a 25-man squad for games against Angola and Guinea Bissau. The teenager ended the tournament as the top scorer with four goals for Amajita, helping them to a fourth-place finish in Zambia.

Ghana national team coach Avram Grant selected a 23-man squad that will do duty for the Black Stars in matches against South Africa and Uganda. The Ghanaians will face Bafana in a friendly encounter on October 11, but will first need to negotiate a World Cup qualifier against the Cranes of Uganda on October 7.

South African national team midfielder Dean Furman says that Bafana Bafana have what it takes to win the 2016 Nelson Mandela Challenge against Egypt on Tuesday, 6 September, at Orlando Stadium in Soweto. Bafana have won the past two editions of the Mandela Challenge, defeating Senegal and Cote D’Ivoire 1-0 and 2-0 respectively.

South Africa national team coach Shakes Mashaba has selected a 25-man squad that will do battle away to Mauritania on September 5 in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. The Fennec Foxes place in 19th position in world football governing body FIFA’s list for the month, but 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions Cote D’Ivoire continue to keep the North Africans under pressure for top spot, coming in at 21st in the ranking and second on the continent.
