Thulani Serero: Angola Win Important For Bafana

South Africa beat Angola 2-1 in an international friendly in Cape Town on Tuesday evening, and one of the star performers was keen to explain the importance of the victory.

Gambia went ahead with a Alexander Mfutila goal in the 24th minute, before an equaliser from new striker Thamsanqa Gabuza two minutes before half time after a Thulani Serero assist.

Good work from Thulani Serero and Ayanda Patosi forced a goal, after a wonderful chip from Patosi could not be cleared by defender Malanda, who was credited with the own goal.

Bafana stumbled to a goalless draw against Gambia in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Saturday, continuing their worrying trend of struggling to find the back of the net and wasting a home game against an opponent that would be considered weaker on paper.

For that reason the 2-1 victory over the Angolans came as a relief for coach Shakes Mashaba and his players. Thulani Serero was one of the best players on the pitch for Bafana, and he revealed why the win was important when speaking after the encounter.

“I think it’s a good win for us, I think we needed it, the guys came through and thanks for the support we got here in Cape Town,” Serero commented, according to SoccerLaduma.

“We knew we had to get goals, as soon as the second, you know we don’t want to lose the game, so we started falling back and defending. But it’s normal. I think the most important thing was to win,” the talented player added.
