In this episode of ‘How To Africa’ we feature Anie Akpe, founder IBOM LLC, a New York-based consultancy firm that educates Africans in the Diaspora seeking to start small and medium sized businesses.

Akpe gave five key tips that one need when starting a business consultancy anywhere in the world. These are:

Tip #1 – knowing your target market: IBOM’s target market is technology. So everything that they do is geared towards technology. By knowing their demographics, which is the age group that they are looking to get into, they are able to tailor their services to make sure they are useful to these target group.  “If you don’t have a niche then you’ll be all over the place then you’ll be of use to no one,” Akpe says.

Tip #2 – Marketing: Akpe says “You have to think about your business plan. In your business plan you have to think about how I’m I going to reach these people? What is my budget? what is my capacity? These are the questions that you ask yourself as you start a business consultancy.”

Tip # 3 – Get a mentor: “You need that mentor to show you the ropes. They’ve been there, they’ve done that. You can ask them simple questions and they may be able to assist you along the way.”

Tip #4 – Use Technology: “Most people forget about the basics. Everything does not have to be hand written. There are things called apps, there are things called social media. These are things that are going to help you establish your business.”

Tip #5 – Create Partnerships: “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel when you’re doing business consultancy. There are other people that will love to partner with you and help you get started. So make sure you learn more on doing partnerships.”
