Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana player Teko Modise has spoken out against the xenophobic attacks that have been taking place in parts of South Africa.

The country has seen a number of xenophobic attacks grip Kwazulu-Natal and Gauteng in recent days, with violence against African immigrants in South Africa prompting the government and police services to act quickly in an attempt to stop the actions that are causing deaths, injuries and damage to property, while also forcing those affected to leave their homes for special camps set up to assist them.

South Africans have been coming out in their numbers to denounce the scourge of xenophobia and march for peace and brotherhood amongst Africans, while communities have banded together to provide relief to those affected by collecting food, clothes and various other items that are in need.

Immigrants from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and other countries have been targeted in the horrible and unwarranted attacks, which have seen a number of sportsmen and women coming out to condemn the violence.

One of the leaders within the Pretoria-based side, Modise has been disgusted by the scenes of violence that has dented South Africa’s reputation as a country of friendly and welcoming people, though a small group of people are to blame for the terrible violence.

“Xenophobia is a disease we need to stop,” Modise said to Goal. “We shouldn’t forget that our leaders fled the country to live in exile and they were cared for by people from different nations.

“We are called a rainbow nation for a reason. Let’s not lose what this country stands for, with these senseless attacks,” he added.

Modise has struggled to earn his spot in the South African national team recently, but has represented Bafana on 66 occasions, scoring 10 goals.
