Morocco’s Top-Rated, Atlas-Hugged Golf Courses

Morocco’s Top-Rated, Atlas-Hugged Golf Courses

1 of 12

If you don’t have a ticket to the 2015 Master’s Golf Tournament underway this week in Augusta, Georgia, there’s always Morocco. Rain is expected almost every day this week in Augusta anyway, according to CBSSports.

Golf has been in existence in Morocco since 1917 and yet it has not been recognized by Europeans as the place to be. Morocco can be a year-round golf destination in North Africa just a quick flight from Europe. It is typically affordable and accessible.

Great climate, fascinating landscapes — golfing at the foot of snow-covered Atlas Mountains —  and a diversity of golf courses, some designed by world renowned architects, are just a few of the attractions for golfers in Morocco.

Morocco won the African Golf Destinations of the Year Award in 2010 from the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.

Here are a few reasons why. Check out some of Morocco’s top-rated, Atlas-hugged golf courses.

El Jadida Royal Golf Course

Have you ever heard “Keep you head down and swing through the ball”? It might be impossible to do this playing golf at El Jadida Royal Golf Course since the course lies right next to a bay and the scenery is spectacular.

Known as Mazagan under Portuguese rule from 1502 to 1769, the coastal city of El Jadida was established by colonial rulers as a West African staging post for explorers heading to South America and beyond. The city’s fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

El Jadida golf course is part of a 117-room hotel and spa complex. This 6,848-yard golf course has been carved through a small forest of pine and eucalyptus trees. American golf course architect Cabell Robertson designed this course, completed in 1993.

Nearby El Jadida Royal Golf Course about 53 miles south of Casablanca, Mazagan is another spectacular golf course designed by Gary Player. A par 72 golf course, it plays at 7,210 yards. The course has fantastic fairways and perfect greens. Rainfall at Mazagan is minimal but there are plenty of sea breezes from the Atlantic Ocean. The club has a fully equipped pro shop and restaurant and caters to beginner and professionals. The course’s undulating dunes and valleys were created entirely with sand from the region for a unique challenge. The course uses recycled water. The grass used on the course is the paspalum –dark green and resistant to salt water.

Palmeraie Golf Course

The original Palmeraie golf course was established in 1992 by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones. This course is about five miles northwest of Marrakech, and  set within an ancient forest of palm trees that has been traced back to the 11th century. Trent designed two nine-hole courses — Jbilettes for the front nine and Atlas for the back nine. Recently another nine holes were added. Named Tensift, they have many more bunkers and are a little bit more challenging.

Still at the Palmeraie Golf Course is the Atlas tract — holes 10 to 18. These two nine-hole courses are relatively flat and there are some large ponds within these two tracts which often lead to low scores. Even so, you might be fishing or looking for a ball that landed in one of these ponds. You still might be humored by slicing or hooking one into the pond and taking the stroke penalty.

Soleil Golf Course

The Soleil Golf course is about three hours from all major European Capitals. Not only is it relatively convenient, it offers a great year round temperature. Soleil (sun in French) is considered one of the best golf destinations in Morocco.
There are two 18-hole golf courses in Agadar. The Tikida course was designed in the middle of a eucalyptus forest by Fernando Mueller and Gerard Courbin. The Championship course has more of a “Florida” spirit, forcing you to make decisions about large bunkers, elevated tee boxes, and greens and water hazards.

Whether you are an expert golfer or a beginner, you can take lessons anywhere. And they say that practice makes perfect; but truly perfect practice makes perfect. At Sadia golf course there is a driving range where you take those practice shots where the scores don’t count. But making the effort of practicing with a golf pro or by yourself by putting in the hours will get your rhythm and timing just right. At Braemar Golf the club house is undergoing redevelopment. The course and practice range are open. Saidia is served by both Oujda and Nador Airports, about 50 minutes away. The resort has a marina which could become the third largest in the Mediterranean with 1,350 slips and five hotels.
