The star of “Man vs. Wild,” Bear Grylls is bringing his Survival Academy to South Africa, according to a report in TourismUpdate.

The academy was first launched in Africa in 2014 at Victoria Falls. The South African version will offer a survival adventure course in 2015 teaching a variety of survival skills such as astro-navigation, trap-and-snare skills, an intro to “exotic” snacks, abseiling and a helicopter landing.

Grylls teamed up with South African action-adventure specialists, Group 73, for the South African venture. Group 73 describes itself as collaboration of people with experience in the South African police and special forces. It offers strategic action simulations, equipment and hands-on assistance to the film industry, businesses and the public.

Recognized as one of the faces of survival skills, Grylls, was trained in the British Special Forces and now he stars in TV series such as “Worst Case Scenario” and “Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” according to TourismUpdate.

In 2014, against the backdrop of Victoria Falls, Grylls launched his academy at the Stanley & Livingstone Private Game Reserve, part of the Mantis Collection of lodges, according to AFKTravel.

In 2014, an intensive five-day course cost $3,038 US and culminated in a 36-hour expedition that put skills to the test such as tracking, skinning and crossing difficult terrain. The course was led by instructors trained by crews from Grylls’s survival shows.

The inaugural South African event is planned May 2 and May 3.
