Gernot Rohr Named As New Burkina Faso Coach

Burkina Faso have announced that German coach Gernot Rohr will be taking over the national team with immediate effect.

The Stallions have been without a coach since Paul Put was fired following the side’s failure to progress from the group stages of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Equatorial Guinea.

This disappointment was magnified by the fact that the Burkinabe ended the 2013 Nations Cup campaign in South Africa as runners up.

Keen to move on with a new coach and not waste unnecessary time sifting through a reported 38 applications which arrived for the job, the Federation have come to a decision, with the German tactician given the Stallions’ reigns.

Other applicants for the national team top job included the likes of former French national team coach Jacques Santini, Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi, Congo boss Claude Le Roy and former Senegal coach Alain Giresse.

Rohr comes into his new position with a wealth of African experience, having previously coached both Niger and Gabon.

The 61-year-old formed part of a final three-man shortlist that was recently released by the Burkinabe Federation, which also included Keshi and Milovan Rajevac.

Rohr’s first points of business with his new charges with include preparing the Stallions for the AFCON qualifiers for the 2017 edition, which begins in June, while World Cup qualifiers for the 2018 competition in Russia will begin in October.
