Michel Dussuyer Resigns As Guinea Coach

Guinea’s departure from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) at the hands of Ghana on Sunday has resulted in the resignation of their 55-year-old coach, Michel Dussuyer.

The Frenchman made the decision to leave the national team following his side’s 3-0 defeat to the Black Stars at the quarter-final stage of the competition.

Dussuyer led his charges through a group stage in which Guinea drew all three matches against Cote D’Ivoire, Mali and Cameroon, before being fortunate enough to progress to the knockout stages of the tournament thanks to the drawing of lots, seeing Mali return home as the unlucky casualty of that game of chance.

Guinea’s luck ran out in the quarter-final, however, as they faced a strong showing of skill and determination from Avram Grant’s Ghana side, who will be facing AFCON hosts Equatorial Guinea in the semi-final on Thursday.

Following the game, the Guinea coach told reporters at a press conference, “Ghana has potential difference-makers, if we make mistakes, we can’t advance. If you consider the first goal, then the second, just before half time, it becomes near-impossible to come back.”

“We complicated the match with that goal right at the beginning, there was an immediate loss of confidence, then the gift, things become very complicated against a talented team like Ghana,” he added.

Dussuyer was hoping that it would be third time lucky with his beloved Guinea, as he has coached the national team on two previous occasions, but it was not to be.

He becomes the second AFCON coach to resign following the decision of fellow Frenchman Alain Giresse to part ways with Senegal following their disappointing first round exit from the tournament.

The semi-finals of the competition take place on Wednesday and Thursday, with Cote D’Ivoire taking on DR Congo and Ghana facing hosts Equatorial Guinea.
