How South African Airways Lost $3.7M Through Operations

For the year which ended March 2014, South African Airways (SAA) has revealed operation losses of $3.7 million, CCTV Africa reported. Within the African continent, the airline experienced a 17 percent revenue increase. However with international flights, SAA experienced a $160 million loss. This spring the airline will cut some international routes to combat the revenue slip, CCTV Africa noted.

“The maintenance cost is largely driven by contracts,” Wolf Meyer, SAA chief financial officer said in the report. “The increase in this line item [is] basically due to currency weakness ($175 million) and currency losses on our liability provision.”
