The Italian Navy says it intercepted 3,000 African sea migrants early Saturday and transported them to Sicily, WorldBreakingNews reports.

Hundreds of migrants arrive in Italy every day, mostly from Eritrea, Somalia and Syria, according to the report.

Many are now being rescued off dilapidated boats by the Italian Navy. The Italian government launched a sea patrol mission in October to prevent more fatalities after 366 migrants drowned in a 2013 shipwreck, Reuters reports in video footage provided by the Italian Navy.

Since the drowning deaths, five Italian vessels known as Operation Mare Nostrum have been assigned to help rescue migrants. Reuters says so far the operation has hauled more than 43,000 people from the sea.

The migrant rescue operations cost the Italian government more than 9 million euros ($12.25 million US).
