Tanzania’s Rice Production, Export Boost to Benefit East African Market

Tanzania envisages increasing rice production up to three million tonnes for export to the East African market, the National Assembly was told here.

The Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Food Cooperatives, Adam Malima, said that at the moment the country’s capacity is to produce 1,200,000 tonnes of which 300,000 was for export and the remaining is sold in the local market.

“Our target is to cover the entire region and as far afield as South Sudan,” he said when responding to a supplementary question by Mohamed Ibrahim Sanya (Mji Mkongwe –CUF) who wished to know why the country was not taking advantage to cover the region with supplies of the quality rice found in the country.
