Africa’s Richest Man Joins Twitter After Nearly Doubling His Fortune In 2013

After a successful year that saw his net worth nearly double in 2013, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote  joined the social media network, Twitter.

Dangote’s twitter handle, @AlikoDangote, got an automatic verification from Twitter and had gained over 28,000 followers just 48 hours after the account was opened.

It had only one tweet saying “Glad to be on Twitter. Wishing you all a prosperous New Year. Stay positively committed to achieving your dreams, nothing is impossible,”

The multi-billionaire philanthropist is President of Dangote Group of Companies and has diverse interests in various industries including oil and gas, food, cement, and telecommunications.

He is listed as Africa’s richest man, 25th globally, by Forbes Magazine, which estimates the Kano-born businessman to be worth $22.9 billion up from $12.8 billion at the end of 2012. The Nigerian mogul saw his fortune sour $10.1 billion or 79 percent in 2013 helped by a good run in his cement business.

Dangote plans to expand his cement company by to building new plants in Kenya and Niger at a cost of $750 million. He also plans to construct a private oil refinery in Nigeria that will have a refining capacity of 400,000 barrels per day and will reduce Nigeria’s dependence on oil imports when completed.

In 2013, he raised $4.5 billion from investors who were more than willing to partner with the best hands in Africa business.
