Sustainable Gin? Company Promises 15% To African Wildlife

Robin Gerlach, Tessa Wienker and Henry Palmer became passionate about conserving African wildlife after travels throughout the continent.

Now they are creating a sustainable, ethical business that supports Africa’s unique wildlife, Palmer said.

Inspired by Africa, distilled in Germany and launching this month in the U.K., Elephant Gin is a new alcoholic drink whose makers promise to donate 15 percent of proceeds to African wildlife, according to a report in TheSpiritsBusiness.

The small-batch, London dry gin is said to “capture the essence of Africa,” using 14 botanicals including the African superfruit baobab, African wormwood and buchu, a plant native to Western South Africa, the report said.

The gin is described as having a “complex but strikingly smooth” taste with “floral, fruity and spicy flavors” and is 45 percent alcohol by volume.

The Elephant Gin company intends to support the preservation of African wildlife by donating 15 percent of profits to African elephant foundations.
