Herve Renard And Hugo Broos In Contention For South Africa Coaching Job

AFCON-winning coaches Herve Renard and Hugo Broos are among the final candidates being considered for the unoccupied position of South African national team coach, with a final decision set to be made in the coming days.

Broos, who is currently Cameroon coach, and Renard, who is in charge of Morocco, are both successful tacticians as far as the continental game is concerned.

Belgian coach Broos masterminded a stunning Africa Cup of Nations title triumph for the Central Africans in Gabon last month month, where Cameroon managed a 2-1 victory over favourites Egypt in the final to earn their fifth AFCON trophy.

Frenchman Renard has won the Nations Cup twice, with Zambia in 2012 and Cote D’Ivoire three years later. He took Morocco to last month’s AFCON competition, but failed to move past the quarter-final stage.

Previous Bafana coach Ephraim ‘Shakes’ Mashaba was fired in December following what the football authorities in the country deemed as ‘gross misconduct and violation of the SAFA communications policy’, relating to a public argument with SAFA officials immediately after Bafana’s historic 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Senegal in Polokwane on November 12.

Bafana created a committee to pour over the applications from both local and international coaches interested in taking charge of the South African national team.

Former Bafana coach and current Iraq boss Carlos Quieroz seemed destined for a return to the South African bench, but recent reports suggest that his $7 million resignation clause with the Iraqi FA is set to scuppered any potential move from the South African Football Association for his services.

The coach was supposed to be confirmed last Friday, but South African soccer authorities decided to postpone the announcement to this week due to his unavailability for a press conference unveiling.

Bafana is looking good in qualifying for next year’s World Cup after their two games. The recent home win over Senegal after a draw away to Burkina Faso allowed South Africa to share top spot in Group D with the Stallions on four points, ahead of Cape Verde and Senegal.

The next Bafana coach is set to be confirmed later this year, and many believe that Renard will be the next man in charge of the South Africans.
