Egypt isn’t the only African country with pyramids. UNESCO has designated 135 extraordinary sites on the continent you can add to your bucket list. Because of sanctions and Sudan’s human rights record, the Pyramids of Meroe in the Nubian Desert are a more recent addition you may never have heard of. The capital of the ancient Kingdom of Kush was the seat of power for the Nubian pharaohs — part of the same system of religion and rule in ancient Egypt. Meroe gets far fewer visitors because fewer tourists travel to Sudan. If you make it, you will likely be one of the only visitors.
