Rwanda is criminally underrated as a tourist destination in Africa. Set deep in the mountains of the country’s southwest, Nyungwe Forest National Park is the largest area of original montane rainforest left in East Africa — that’s forest growing at up to 10,000-feet altitude. Nyungwe offers amazing hiking, canopy walks, and the option to track chimpanzees. Hiking trails range from an easy 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) to the 42-kilometer (25 mile) Congo-Nile Divide Trail, which requires a guide and multiple overnight stays in the forest. The Congo-Nile is steep and difficult, and should not be undertaken lightly.
