8 South African Athletes Excelling Ahead Of Rio Olympics

The 2016 Olympic games is set to take place in Rio during the month of August, and South African athletes are preparing for the multi-sport event by taking part in various athletes competitions around the world.

From sprinting to long distance running, hurdles and discus, South African athletics is shaping up to send a strong selection of contenders to Rio 2016.

The 400m record-holder performed well at the Racers Grand Prix meeting in Kingston at the weekend. He broke his own South African best in the Men’s 300m sprint, delivering a time of 31.03 seconds. He beat American LaShawn Merritt into first place by 0.20, while recording the third best ever time behind Michael Johnson (30.85) and Usain Bolt (30.97).

South African 100m sprinter Simbine has been training at Usain Bolt’s camp in Jamaica along with a few other SA athletes, and the experience has been beneficial for the 22-year-old who managed a 10.01 time to finish just 0.05 short of his record. Bolt won the race in Kingston in 9.88, while Simbine finished sixth in a strong lineup.

Scott’s university track career came to an end over the past few days with victories in the 5,000m and 10,000m races at the NCAA Championships in Eugene. The 10,000m title was won on Thursday in a time of 32:35.69, with the 5,000m race going the 23-year-old’s way on Saturday with a finishing time of 15:57.07.

Long Jumper Roelf Pienaar, who represents Arkansas State in the United States, managed to secure a silver medal for his efforts over the weekend at the four-day NCAA Championships. He performed well to secure a leap of 7.93m for his second-placed finish, continuing the trend of South African athletes doing well this weekend.

Competing at the Racers Grand Prix in Kingston, Palframan took seventh position in the Women’s 400m event in her best time of the season, clocking in at 53.01. She also enjoyed training time spent at Bolt’s camp in Jamaica.

Another of the South African athletes taking part in an athletics meet at the BestMed Tuks Athletics Stadium in Pretoria was 100m sprint national record holder Carina Horn. She won her race of choice with a time of 11.18, equalling her best time of the season in preparation for the Olympics.

The 400m hurdler was in fine form over the weekend, booking his place in Brazil for the Olympics with a 400m-hurdles time of 49.24s at the BestMed-Mondo meeting on Saturday, winning the race and becoming the third 400m hurdles qualifier from SA.

Russell Tucker

Discus specialist Tucker earned his ticket for Rio with an excellence discus throw of 62.12m, coming under the qualification distance and ensuring his best performance yet. He will join Team South Africa at the Olympics during August.
