Excited caffeine enthusiasts in Johannesburg, South Africa, queued for hours on Thursday waiting to get their first mugs of steamy coffee from the first ever Starbucks outlet to open in the Rainbow nation.

The U.S.-based coffee brand opened its first-ever outlet in sub-Saharan Africa on Thursday April 21 at exactly 7:30 a.m. in Johannesburg, at the corner of Tyrwhitt and Cradock Avenues in Rosebank.

Reuters reported long lines  of caffeine crowds at the Rosebank shopping hub, similar to scenes last seen when doughnut maker Krispy Kreme opened its first store up the road in November last year.

“We arrived at 7:30 last night … We wanted to be the first customers here. First time having Starbucks in South Africa is a great experience,” Mohammed, the first person to be served at the outlet, said.

The introductory prices at the new South African outlet are cheaper compared to what the same mugs of coffee sells at in the US and European markets.

Taste Holdings, the license holder for the Starbucks stores in South Africa, plans to open about 15 more shops in South Africa in the next two years. This will then grow by 20 new outlets per year, reaching 200 stores in the country in less than 10 years.
