Not Yet Ebola-Free: Over 100 People Quarantined In Sierra Leone

Over 100 people have been placed on quarantine in Sierra Leone  on suspicion they could be infected with Ebola from a woman who died on Jan. 12, two days before the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak over.

The death of the woman in Sierra Leone, the last country that is still fighting the disease that ravaged three African countries and killed over 11,300 people since March 2014, has raised new fears that the epidemic could be far from over.

Already 10 other flare-ups have taken place in areas where the virus transmission was thought to have ended, raising new questions about WHO procedures in assessing whether an epidemic is over.

When WHO announced last week that “all known chains of transmission (had) been stopped in West Africa” it cautioned that possible flare-ups were possible since Ebola survivors can carry the virus for several months.

Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health and the Office of National Security said in a joint statement that 109 people have so far been quarantined, 28 of whom were high-risk cases.

“An active case investigation continues in the four districts where the young woman was known to have traveled,” the statement said.

According to The HuffingtonPost, there are more than 17,000 survivors of Ebola, most of who live in West African countries where there are few specialized treatment resources.

Many of the survivors have vision and hearing issues. Some others experience physical and emotional pains, fatigue and other problems. A number of female survivors also have suffered miscarriages or had stillborn children for reasons that are still not clear.
