Haydn Porteous Victorious At Joburg Open

South African golfer Haydn Porteous emerged as the victor at the Joburg Open over the weekend, allowing him to win his first European Tour event following a bogey-free three-under-par final round of 69.

The relatively unknown 21-year-old managed to take the title by two shots on 18 under from fellow South African Zander Lombard (71), meaning that both golfers earned a spot at the British Open at Royal Troon in July.

In addition to Porteous and Lombard, England’s Anthony Wall (72) came third and also qualified for the Open.

The Joburg Open took place in Johannesburg from January 14-17, with 210 of the world’s top golfers descending on the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Course in Linksfield for a chance to win one of the most prestigious tournaments on the South African and European golf tours.

Porteous had missed the cut at his two previous European Tour events this season, but made up for those disappointments in style this week, as he took the Joburg Open crown.

Previous winners include Charl Swartzel in 2010 and 2011, Schwartzel in 2010 and 2011, Branden Grace in 2012, Richard Sterne in 2008 and 2013, as well as George Coetzee in 2014 and Andy Sullivan in 2015.

The sponsors involved in the organisation and hosting of the Joburg Open include big names such as VW, the Hilton Hotel Group, Emirates and The Pro Shop, while the tournament itself was broadcast in 35 countries around the world to over 400 million viewers.
