Joburg Open Under Way As Golf Takes Center Stage

The Joburg Open is taking place in Johannesburg Jan. 14-17, with 210 of the world’s top golfers descending on the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Course in Linksfield for a chance to win one of the most prestigious tournaments on the South African and European golf tours.

Hosted in the city for the 10th time this year, a total of $1.62 million prize money will be shared with all of the golfers who make the halfway cut, while the eventual winner will take home a cool $217,000.

Previous winners include Charl Swartzel in 2010 and 2011, Schwartzel in 2010 and 2011, Branden Grace in 2012, Richard Sterne in 2008 and 2013, as well as George Coetzee in 2014 and Andy Sullivan in 2015.

The sponsors involved in the organisation and hosting of the Joburg Open include big names such as VW, the Hilton Hotel Group, Emirates and The Pro Shop, while the tournament itself is broadcast in 35 countries around the world to over 400 million viewers as an excellent advert for Johannesburg’s abilities as a world class host.

The prize money is not the only reason that so many golf professionals make their way to the city for the competition, as the Joburg Open is the only tournament in South Africa where the eventual top three receive a direct entry into The British Open, the world’s most prestigious tournament.
