South African version of the apprentice

In 2005 Sexwale hosted the South African version of the reality television show made famous in the US by billionaire Donald Trump. At the end of the show, which lasted a single season, Sexwale chose to hire both finalists, Zanele Batyashe and Khomotso Choma, which upset many fans of the show due to the unorthodox finale. Instead of using the typical catch phrase of “You’re Fired”, coined by Trump, Sexwale opted to use the more diplomatic, “You’re dismissed”.

He was on a US terrorist list

In 2002, the businessman attempted to enter the US to attend the listing of Gold Fields on the New York Stock Exchange, as he owned a stake in that company. He was unable to attend as he was refused a visa to enter due to the fact that he was still on the country’s list of global terrorists, along with many prominent South African anti-apartheid figures such as Nelson Mandela and Sidney Mufamadi. In 2013 he was detained and questioned at JFK International Airport as his name still appeared on a terrorist watch list. The South African ambassador to the US, Ebrahim Rasool, was forced to intervene with the US state department to secure Sexwale’s release.

‘Tokyo’

The nickname Tokyo, which has become so widely used that many believe it is his actual name, stems from his youth, when he was interested in karate and his friends coined the name ‘Tokyo’ in reference to his appreciation for the art of karate. The name stuck, and many people would not know that his actual full name is Mosima Gabriel Sexwale.
