Algeria Maintain Top Spot In FIFA Ranking

Algeria have managed to retain the top position in Africa according to the most recent edition of the FIFA rankings for the month of August.

The Fennec Foxes place in 19th position in world football governing body FIFA’s list for the month, but 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champions Cote D’Ivoire continue to keep the North Africans under pressure for top spot, coming in at 21st in the ranking and second on the continent.

Ghana are Africa’s third best nation and 27th in the world, while the Black Stars are followed by the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia as the 34th best country in the world, and fourth on the continent.

Number five on the continent is occupied by Senegal as the 39th side globally, while Cameroon, Congo and Cape Verde follow in 42nd, 43rd and 50th respectively.

The ninth position in Africa and 52nd in the world is the domain of the Pharaohs of Egypt, who continue to improve their standing since coach Hector Cuper joined earlier in the year.

The top ten in completed by Nigeria, with the Super Eagles and new coach Sunday Oliseh aiming to improve on their current ranking of 53rd on the global stage ahead of World Cup qualifiers in October.

South Africa disappointed their fans by continuing a steady decline in the rankings, moving from 70th to 72nd position while Bafana are now considered 17th in African terms.

One of the biggest movements in the list and certainly the greatest from an African perspective came courtesy of Mauritania, who moved an impressive 15 places to 33rd in Africa and 113th in the world thanks to their recent surprise 2-0 African Nations Championship (CHAN) victory over Sierra Leone.
