Somalia launched its first technology innovation hub aimed at providing technology solutions to some of the challenges facing the country. The UN Mission in Somalia said, “The hub offers young entrepreneurs a platform for technological innovations and collaborations, including business training, mentorship, free internet connectivity, and support during the incubation stages of their start-ups.” The hub will a working space for young people keen on using technology to drive business.

Africa Science Week will witness sessions such as engaging students in active learning of chemistry, technology, and engineering using interactive science kits. Students will also participate in physical activities and science projects competition followed by an award ceremony. According to Thierry Zomahoun, Aims president, the NEF Africa Science Week is the first coordinated science week across Africa. “Our primary objective is to develop tomorrow’s scientists and technologists,” Zomahoun said.

Tremendous growth in East Africa’s technology sector has started to turn heads, cementing the region has a high-tech hub. Technology hubs have sprung up across the region — from iHub in Nairobi to Hiveco Lab in Uganda and kLab in Rwanda. There are now more than 90 tech hubs across Africa, according to the World Bank. These hubs are providing a place for tech start-ups, such as Jasper Onono’s ‘matatu’ card game in Uganda, to meet up, swap ideas and grow.

South African entrepreneurs Paul Cartmel and Nic Haralambous have launched AfricanUp.com, a website dedicated to connecting startups, accelerators, investors and technology hubs around Africa. Users can post their own entrepreneurial stories on the website and recommend their peers, with the end goal being to allow users to grow their professional profiles and reputations.
