    Many migrants who make it to Italy don’t tell friends and family about the hardship. A campaign that exposes the realities is now targeting potential African migrants on social media in 15 West and Central African countries — where most arrivals in Italy originate. Posts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram give testimonials created by migrants in multiple languages. All end with the warning, “Be aware, brother” and “Be aware, sister.” A record 181,000 migrants crossed the Mediterranean in 2016 on flimsy boats operated by smugglers. Of those, 25,000 were mostly unaccompanied children. Arrivals in Italy are up 66% so far in 2017.

    U.K. Navy drones helped authorities seize a ton of heroin worth $155 million from smugglers en route to Tanzania. Cheap heroin is abundant in Dar es Salaam. There are more than 500,000 heroin users in East Africa, according to the U.N. Up to 60 percent of them may live in Tanzania with a heavy concentration in the port city of Dar es Salaam. That’s where popular Indian Ocean drug trade routes make landfall, AlJazeera reports.

  • Drop in Ghana’s currency spurs cocoa smuggling to Ivory Coast

    Smugglers have trafficked around 40,000 tonnes of Ghanaian cocoa beans into top grower Ivory Coast since November to take advantage of a drop in Ghana’s cedi currency, exporters and merchants said. Cocoa smuggling between the two countries is common but over the past decade it has mainly involved Ivorian beans being taken illegally to Ghana.
