The Rwandan government will be working with Finnish mobile giants Nokia and local company SRG in the deployment of smart city technology solutions throughout the country. Nokia’s advanced capabilities in this arena will be used to deliver a secure and effective smart city solution for the East African nation, which will include a mission-critical access network, IP and cloud core networks, and Nokia’s ‘impact platform’, which will enable numerous applications related to the internet of things (IoT).

Pitched as Africa’s answer to Dubai, Eko Atlantic is a multibillion dollar residential and business development on Victoria Island along the renowned Bar Beach shoreline in Lagos. There is no shortage of doubters and critics. The truth, however, is that Lagos deserves its dream and the economic case for Eko Atlantic is sound. The only problem is that the plans are not radical enough. This project is under-imagined.

Construction has begun on a Chinese-financed R84-billion ($7.24 billion) city in Modderfontein, eastern Johannesburg, The Star reported last week. Chinese firm Shanghai Zendai planned to develop the 1,600 hectares of land into the “New York of Africa”, Dai Zhikang, the company’s founder and chairman, said at a press conference in November 2013.

A Hong Kong company providing technology and telecoms services for Africa’s first ever “smart city” project in Johannesburg has quietly been building up a client base across the continent. On Tuesday, PCCW Global announced that it has inked a deal with Chinese urban developer Shanghai Zendai to provide telecoms and tech services for an R84 billion Zendai smart city project in Modderfontein, Johannesburg, South Africa.
