    The government of India said may share technology in renewable energy with Africa to power the remotest and poorest corners of the second largest continent. The Indo-African partnership is based on empathy as the countries face similar challenges, Power Minister Piyush Goyal said at the launch of the third International Solar Alliance (ISA) Program on “Scaling Up Minigrids and Microgrids” during the “Africa-India Cooperation on Powering Africa–Strengthening ISA and Africa-India RE Partnerships.”

    Mired in an energy crisis, South Africa signed a controversial agreement with Russia in September to talk about building 9,600-megawatts of new nuclear energy. Nuclear “is a dying industry and there are just too many unanswered questions for South Africa to go down this path,” said a Russian environmental activist visiting SA to talk about the deal. The country should look instead to renewable energy, he said.

    South Africa’s first Renewable Technology Centre is still under construction but administrators want technicians to start applying now for training there. The center — the first of its kind in Africa, according to CNBCAfrica — is being built at a cost of 105-million rand ($9.57 million) with skills training being touted as the No. 1 priority. But here’s the catch: only experienced technicians are invited to apply to train there.
