Many migrants who make it to Italy don’t tell friends and family about the hardship. A campaign that exposes the realities is now targeting potential African migrants on social media in 15 West and Central African countries — where most arrivals in Italy originate. Posts on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram give testimonials created by migrants in multiple languages. All end with the warning, “Be aware, brother” and “Be aware, sister.” A record 181,000 migrants crossed the Mediterranean in 2016 on flimsy boats operated by smugglers. Of those, 25,000 were mostly unaccompanied children. Arrivals in Italy are up 66% so far in 2017.

What makes one an expat? The term embodies a double standard, according to one source. Many African governments have made it difficult for companies to get work permits for expats, hoping instead to fill executive positions locally. One alternative for multinational companies is to recruit Africans returning from the diaspora. This aligns with the push in most African countries for indigenisation – a policy to use local people to fill senior positions rather than going expat.

Kenya’s anti-terror campaign, Operation Usalama Watch, has been the subject of much international criticism. In the 1980s, Kenyan forces launched a campaign that ended with tens of thousands of Somali Kenyans losing their (allegedly) legally obtained Kenyan citizenship. Despite claims by officials and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta that the current anti-terror campaign does not target specific groups, there’s uneasiness in the immigrant and refugee communities.
