With its island-building binge, Dubai is a big customer for African sand. So are Africa’s expanding concrete manufacturing giants. For the island project “The Palm Jumeirah,” Dubai used 200 million cubic meters of sand and stone. Some of the sand came from the sea off Dubai’s coast but a large amount came from African beaches. In Cape Verde, one in three people is unemployed. Sand mining is a fast way to earn money. The consequences of excessive sand mining are devastating. On beaches where tortoises once buried their eggs, there is now only dirt and stones.

There are significant investments from the UAE region going into Cape Town, Washington, D.C. and New York, said Mohammed Al Shaibani, CEO of ICD, in a statement. The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry has set an ambitious target to increase trade between Ghana and Dubai to $5 billion in the next five years. Currently, the volume of trade between Ghana and Dubai stands at $2.5 billion. President of the Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hamad Buamim, disclosed this at the official opening of the Dubai Chamber office in Accra.

Emirates, a global connector of people and places, is offering Ethiopian customers a free UAE visa when booking a ticket to Dubai. The offer, which is valid until the 20th November 2014 and for travel until December 2014, is available across First Class, Business Class and Economy Class. Each visa is valid for one month and is not renewable. Each return ticket to Dubai booked through Emirates is eligible for the free visa.
