The re-election of Paul Kagame to a third term as president of Rwanda on August 4 sparked excitement in some corners of the world and raised concerns in others. While some celebrate Kagame’s amazing success in transforming the small East African nation, others argue that he has already ruled for 17 years, and his continued stay as the country’s first citizen undermines democracy. Both sides have legitimate points.

President Donald Trump’s proposed plan to cut foreign aid funding to African countries by 28 percent provides an opportunity for nations such as Liberia to stand on their own and take responsibility for the well-being and future of their people. In March the American president unveiled a plan to cut funding for the State Department and USAID. The budget proposal will see a massive cut in funding to African beneficiaries, with West African nations such as Liberia set to lose out on a significant amount of aid from the U.S.

Immigrants to the U.S. from Ebola hit West African nations face deportation from May when their work permits expire after the Department of Homeland Security declared their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) will end on May 21, 2017. The decision has spread fear amongst thousands of immigrants from Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone who were hard-hit by the Ebola virus that killed more than 11,000 people and led to economic stagnation in the three nations.

Populism and a backlash against globalization are being blamed for the British and American choices of Brexit and Donald Trump. Practically no one saw this coming, many people say. The next presidential election in South Africa is scheduled for 2019. There’s a feeling that not everyone benefits from globalization, and South Africans should be asking if Julius Malema will be their next president, a Harvard history professsor said. South Africans have 2-plus years to decide.

Investors have used Peso’s fluctuations to rate Donald Trump’s chances of being elected the president of United States of America in an election set for early Wednesday morning.

Ivanka Trump, daughter to U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump, may soon start producing her shoe collection in Africa after Huajian International Group, a Chinese company that makes her footwear, announced plans to shift base to Ethiopia. The shoe-maker currently manufactures in China but plans to relocate to the horn of Africa nation where production costs and labor are cheaper. “My goal is to create 30,000 jobs in Ethiopia by 2020, with exports reaching $1 billion to $1.5 billion,”

The likelihood of the billionaire becoming US president has caused enormous distress both within his own country and across the world. Many see him as dangerous to the world due to his extra-nationalistic views, limited knowledge; low temperament and unpredictability. While I think there is serious cause for the world to worry about the possibility of Trump being entrusted with nuclear weapons as president, I think he might not be very bad for Africa depending on where one stands on matters.

Trevor Noah is South Africa’s most successful export to the U.S. since Charlize Theron. South Africans don’t mind losing him if it means that he uses his platform as the new host of “The Daily Show” to make South Africa more prominent in the eyes and minds of American and global audiences. But when Noah joked that Trump is basically like an African president, he was no longer on firm ground.
