Englishman Stuart Baxter seems set to be officially confirmed as the new South African national soccer team coach, having agreed to terms with the country’s soccer authorities in what will be a return for the SuperSport United manager. The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that the 63-year-old has concluded a deal to coach Bafana Bafana, and all that remains is for the confirmation to be made public via the media.

The Ghana national team will see the return of a familiar face, with coach Kwesi Appiah re-appointed to the role he left after the 2014 World Cup. The 56-year-old softly spoken Ghanaian assumes control of the Black Stars following the departure of former coach Avram Grant, who resigned following the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon in February. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) made the announcement this week, with a two-year contract that will officially begin on May 1.

South African rugby team coach Allister Coetzee is currently in search of the next captain that will lead the Springboks in this year’s list of fixtures, with previous skipper Adriaan Strauss having retired at the end of last year. Strauss captained the Boks during Coetzee’s first year in charge, but soon after he was appointed he made it known that he would retire from international rugby at the end of the season. His coach therefore had a great deal of time to consider his successor.

Polish coach Henry Kasperczak and the Tunisian Football Federation are set to come to an agreement in the coming days that will see him resign from his post at the helm of the North African side. Reports in the French and Tunisian media over the weekend suggested that the 70-year-old would leave the team this month, with the federation quoted as seeking an ‘amicable divorce’. This was the Pole’s second attempt at leading the Carthage Eagles, as he first coached the national team between 1994 and 1998, taking them to the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where they reached the final before losing to host nation South Africa.

South African 19-year-old Luther Singh has been given a chance to shine for his national team after receiving a call-up to represent Bafana Bafana in upcoming friendly international matches this month. Singh, a star player with the under-20 side that reached the semi-finals of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Zambia earlier this month, has been drafted into a 25-man squad for games against Angola and Guinea Bissau. The teenager ended the tournament as the top scorer with four goals for Amajita, helping them to a fourth-place finish in Zambia.

Brazilian Roberto Bianchi has been appointed as the new coach of the Angola national team, and will lead the side with immediate effect. The Angolan Football Federation announced the news this week, with the 50-year-old Brazilian-born tactician set to take the Palancas Negras into the upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Bianchi replaces Jose Kilamba, who was in charge of the Angolans since 2015, becoming the fourth Brazilian to coach the southern African former Portuguese colony.

AFCON-winning coaches Herve Renard and Hugo Broos are among the final candidates being considered for the unoccupied position of South African national team coach, with a final decision set to be made in the coming days. Broos, who is currently Cameroon coach, and Renard, who is in charge of Morocco, are both successful tacticians as far as the continental game is concerned. Belgian coach Broos masterminded a stunning Africa Cup of Nations title triumph for the Central Africans in Gabon last month month, where Cameroon managed a 2-1 victory over favourites Egypt in the final to earn their fifth AFCON trophy.

Cote D’Ivoire coach Michel Dussuyer has resigned from his post at the helm of the West African national team, following the side’s failure to progress from the group stages at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon. The lack of progression to the knockout stages was particularly disappointing for the Elephants due to the fact that they were defending champions, having won the 2015 Nations Cup.

While much of the focus inevitably falls on the African Player of the Year accolade, the various nominees for other soccer award categories have been revealed by CAF ahead of the gala event in January. The additional categories included Women’s Player of the Year, club and national teams of the year, coach of the year and accolades for promising young players.

The Algerian national team have parted ways with Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac after only a few months in the job. The tactician has been relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Fennec Foxes after a disappointing result in the opening match of the group stage World Cup qualifiers, in which Algeria drew 1-1 at home to Cameroon.
