Boko Haram takes schoolgirls to Chad, Cameroon; marries them off on N2,000 bride price each. Most of the 234 Borno schoolgirls in Boko Haram captivity have been ferried abroad to Chad and Cameroon after they were married off to sect members on N2,000 bride price each, an elder told Daily Trust yesterday.

Glencore Xstrata underlined its reputation for going into places where its peer group fears to tread after making a £807m ($1.35bn) bid for Caracal Energy, a UK-listed company that drils for oil in Africa’s Republic of Chad. Shares in Caracal Energy, which will withdraw from a proposed transaction to merge with TransGlobe Energy Corporation, rose 58% to trade at £5.41/share, just below the Glencore Xstrata offer of £5.50/share.

The CFA franc is used by approximately 14.2 percent of Africa’s population but accounts for little more than 5 percent of Africa’s total economic output. This disparity between population and output should give an idea of the degree to which the CFA franc zone is a consistent economic underperformer. Currency stability is a huge attraction, but this is counteracted by anemic growth and political insecurity. In one or two countries, the bet may pay off.
