Three African innovators have been awarded prizes for the impressive innovations that they have conceived and brought to life, as part of the Innovation Prize for Africa 2017. Aly El-Shafei of Egypt was selected as the grand prize winner, with Philippa Ngaju Makobore of Uganda securing the second prize, and Dougbeh-Chris Nyan of Liberia winning the special prize for social impact. The three winners saw their efforts in creating healthcare and energy efficiency-related solutions acknowledged, with prize-money rewarding their hard work and ingenuity.

The Professional Footballers’ Association announced their shortlist for the annual PFA Player of the Year award on Thursday, with six English Premier League stars on the list, but Liverpool’s Senegalese player Sadio Mane was not included. The Teranga Lions attacking player has been in impeccable form at Anfield this season after joining the club in an African record deal worth around $45.1 million.

New Leicester City signing Wilfried Ndidi of Nigeria was presented this week with the Belgian Goal of the Year award for a stunning strike that he scored last year while representing his former club Genk. The midfielder scored the long-range effort in a Belgian top-flight match against rivals Club Brugge while playing for Genk in the 2015-16 season, before he left the club for the English Premier League in January this year.

The additional categories included Women’s Player of the Year, club and national teams of the year, coach of the year and accolades for promising young players.

He says he did so on his own deals, not through the country’s black economic empowerment policies. Zuma has diminished and devalued the ANC, Phosa said. “There is a way out for the ANC. We must be guided by honesty and integrity.” Some South Africans have asked Phosa to run for office. He says his energy is in his businesses, but he’ll be there for South Africa if called. Phosa won the African version of the Nobel prize this year and dedicated it to Mandela.

South African star athlete Wayde van Niekerk has received a special recognition from the Association of National Olympic Committees (Anoc) for his spectacular performance at the Rio Olympic Games in August. The 24-year-old’s incredible athletic performance, which saw him clocking a time of 43.03 seconds to win gold and set a 400m world record at the quadrennial spectacle.
