Solving one of the most frequently sited problems in Nigerian agribusiness, Nigerian-American startup Releaf facilitates a business-to-business marketplace that enables Nigerian businesses to find customers and partners that they can trust. The startup, which is currently taking part in Y Combinator, has signed up around 1,000 African businesses since its public launch in Nigeria at the start of August.

Tech is able to reduce costs, upskill farm workers and save effort and time in Africa’s largest economic sector. From drone tech to mobile apps that assist farmers, Africa is a pioneer on the agritech front, and the technologies that are being incorporated into agriculture are helping to put food on the tables of people all over the world.

South African farmers in the Western Cape have found valuable ways to use drone technology to boost their agricultural output and methods, leading to an upskilled workforce and general cost cutting. Elsenburg farmers are using drones to conduct general monitoring flyovers, assess vegetation health, track and monitor animals which may need assistance, as well as to assess stressed zones among crops that require watering and fertilisation.

The World Bank and venture capital firm Nest have announced a call for applications for the Agritech Challenge 2017 in Kenya. The initiative is the first open innovation program of its kind in Kenya, and it is aimed at connecting promising startups and innovators with one of the region’s leading agribusiness corporates. The AgriTech Challenge, which is sponsored by the World Bank, aims to spur collaborative innovation within the agricultural sector in Kenya.
