Google and three strategic partners have committed to investing a combined $100 million in a broadband infrastructure project to benefit African cities, with fast and reliable internet capabilities in the pipeline. The agreement signed between the four investors sees the creation of a new entity known as CSquared, which will operate as an independent company and will be based out of offices in Nairobi, Kenya.

Although smartphones continue to displace feature phones around the world as the most popular mobile device, feature phones are still very popular in sub-Saharan Africa. “They are an affordable option in regions where even the cheapest Android smartphones are out of reach for many consumers,” an analyst said. Worldwide sales of feature phones are expected to grow to 550 million units in 2016, and drop to 240 million units by 2020.
