Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho is relieved that star Ivorian defender Eric Bailly has returned from injury and is available for selection during a particularly busy Christmas period. The defender suffered a knee injury in English Premier League action in October, with around two months of recovery needed for him to return to the pitch, and he is now ready to contribute for the reds.

The Crystal Palace player made the decision to switch international allegiance last week, submitting an application to FIFA in order to represent the Elephants on the international stage.

South African Wayde van Niekerk said that he was delighted with his 2016 season, after being shortlisted among the finalists for the International Association of Athletics Federations Male World Athlete of the Year award. South Africa has reaffirmed their commitment to hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the coastal city of Durban, despite failing to adhere to certain key deadlines this week. Spaniard Jose Antonio Camacho looks likely to be named the new coach of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosts Gabon. It is not yet officially confirmed, but seems likely at this stage. This is according to the Spanish manager himself, who revealed the news to AFP.

The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup draw took place in Kazan this week, with the eight teams taking part in the World Cup warm-up tournament placed into two groups. Seven of the teams are already known, with the champions of the various Confederations joining 2014 World Cup winners Germany and hosts Russia for the draw.
