Crystal Palace attacking player Wilfried Zaha has made the decision to switch international allegiance from England to Cote D’Ivoire, submitting an application to FIFA in order to represent the Elephants on the international stage. The 24-year-old winger was born in Abidjan but moved to the UK when he was only 4, growing up in the country and eventually representing the English national team.

The African Player of the Year shortlist has been reduced to a selection of the top five nominees for the 2016 award. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed the five players this week, choosing them from the original list of 30 players announced last month.

Ivorian star player Gervinho underwent a successful surgical intervention recently, but due to a confirmed six month recovery time he will miss the 2017 Nations Cup for defending champions Cote D’Ivoire. The talented attacking player suffered a knee cruciate ligament rupture in training with his Chinese Super League side, Hebei Fortune at the end of October.

Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure returned to the Manchester City first team on Saturday to splendid effect, scoring two goals for his English Premier League club as they beat Crystal Palace 2-1. The four-time African Player of the Year has been out of favour with coach Pep Guardiola during this season following a spat between the Spanish tactician and Toure’s controversial agent, Dimitri Seluk.

South African Raven Klaasen and American Rajeev Ram came close to winning their debut ATP World Tour Finals tournament in London at the weekend, but on the day their opponents had the edge. Henri Kontinen and John Peers finished their debut season with the perfect ending on Sunday in London, winning the doubles title during their team debut, beating fellow first-timers Klaasen and Ram 2-6, 6-1, 10-8 at The O2 Arena.
