Manchester United defender Eric Bailly suffered a knee injury in English Premier League action last week, and has revealed that the recovery time will see him aiming to return to the pitch in two months. The Ivorian will therefore be looking to gain fitness in time to feature for Jose Mourinho’s side in the final days of 2016, only weeks before the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is scheduled to take place in Gabon.

Belgian coach Georges Leekens has been confirmed as the new man in charge of the Algeria national team. The former Tunisia and Belgium coach takes over from Milovan Rajevac, who was relieved of his duties as the head coach of the Fennec Foxes after a disappointing result in the opening match of the group stage World Cup qualifiers.

The shortlist for the Ballon d’Or award which recognises the best soccer player in the world was released this week, with two African players included among the 30 nominees. The two African players nominated for the award are Algerian Riyad Mahrez and Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Both were also recently nominated for the CAF African Player of the Year accolade, with the duo among the favourites to scoop the continental prize.

Pieter-Steph du Toit was named SA Rugby’s Player of the Year for 2016 at an awards ceremony held at the Gallagher Conference Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg on Monday night. In doing so, he became the second Springbok lock in two seasons to earn the main award dedicated to the best rugby player from the country over the course of the year.

South African soccer club Mamelodi Sundowns will represent the African continent at the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup in Japan this December. The Tshwane-based outfit earned the honour by becoming African club champions this past weekend. Sundowns beat Egyptian club Zamalek 3-1 on aggregate over two legs to secure their first ever African triumph in the CAF Champions League.

The 2017 Africa Cup of Nations draw was held in Gabon’s capital city Libreville on Wednesday evening, as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) determined the four groups of 16 teams that will be aiming for glory come the AFCON in January 2017. The four host cities that will stage matches include Libreville, Franceville, Oyem and Port Gentil, as Gabon hosts the continental showpiece on their own, six years after co-hosting the competition alongside Equatorial Guinea.
