The Pharaohs have returned to winning ways under Argentine coach Hector Cuper over the last year, and they are coming into the Nations Cup tournament on a high as one of the in-form teams.

Cote D’Ivoire coach Michel Dussuyer has named his squad for the upcoming 2017 AFCON, with a 24-man team set to defend their Nations Cup title in Gabon. Stoke City striker Wilfried Bony and Crystal Palace attacker Wilfried Zaha have been included in the list of attacking players set to feature in the tournament that begins on January 14.

Ghana international Kwadwo Asamoah has asked for coach and national team selectors to not include him in the Black Stars squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. At a time when most players are working hard to earn a call-up to their national teams ahead of the premier continental competition, which takes place in Gabon this January, the Juventus midfielder is going against the grain, asking Ghana coach Avram Grant to let him opt out of the Nations Cup.

The 2017 Nations Cup hosts are ready to welcome the continent, with Gabon having the honour of holding African soccer’s flagship competition in January and February. Sixteen teams will be present in Gabon to fight for the right to be named African champion, with defending champs Cote D’Ivoire aiming to retain the title they won in 2015. Gabon will make an excellent host nation, and the tournament will no doubt go down as a success in both sporting and hosting terms.

Congo have confirmed the appointment of Barthelemy Ngatsono as their new national team head coach ahead of next month’s friendly against Senegal. The friendly encounter against Africa’s best ranked nation will serve as a test for the coach, who may take on the position on a long-term basis.

The Teranga Lions of Senegal were confirmed as the top rated national team in Africa according to the December release of the FIFA Rankings, giving them a significant psychological edge ahead of the 2017 Nations Cup in Gabon next month. The West Africans retained the top spot they earned last month, as well as the 33rd place globally.

The U.S.’s National Basketball Association is on a fast track to build a brand in soccer-crazy Africa. The NBA held its first game in Africa in August 2015.
Now it’s launching its first African basketball academy for boys and girls. This will be the NBA’s sixth academy globally. This is its latest move to unearth talent from outside the U.S. and extend the league’s reach into new territories. Amadou Gallo Fall, the NBA’s vice president for Africa, is originally from Senegal.

Nigerian national team captain John Obi Mikel appears to be close to completing a move to struggling French Ligue 1 club Olympique Marseille, if Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is correct. Mikel has been frustrated at Chelsea this season, failing to appear on the pitch for the first team this term under new coach Antonio Conte.

Telecommunications giant Orange has concluded a new long-term partnership deal as official sponsors for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) flagship competition. The new eight-year deal will see the France-based company confirmed as an official sponsor of five major CAF competitions from 2017 to 2024, beginning with the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Gabon this January.
