Team South Africa returned to Johannesburg from Brazil on Tuesday morning, fresh from their 10-medal winning exploits at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and they were met at OR Tambo International by thousands of fans who had packed the airport to welcome them home. The 137 athletes who represented South Africa at the Games returned home with 10 medals; two gold, six silver and two bronze.

Caster Semenya, 25, won Olympic gold in the 800 meters as expected, but all anyone wanted to talk about was gender. Semenya was subjected to gender testing, sidelined for 11 months and eventually allowed to compete in 2010. She has been diagnosed with hyperandrogenism — testosterone levels that exceed the majority of women. New regulations in 2011 required female athletes to take testosterone-lowering medication if their natural levels are above a certain point. The rules were suspended in July 2015 for two years.

South African telecommunications provider Telkom has been unveiled as the country’s major Olympic sponsor for the upcoming 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Telkom’s association with the team of athletes that will represent the country in Brazil was announced by the South Africans Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee this week.
