A hedge fund with Carlyle Group LP, the world’s second-largest private equity firm, has lost $400 million it invested in 2015 in a Moroccan oil refinery deal, according to a securities filing. Saudi billionaire Mohammed al-Amoudi owns 67.26% of Morocco’s Samir refinery. The deal highlights the risks U.S. investors face in emerging markets that have unfamiliar investor-protection laws. Still, despite the risks, investors continue to find the lure of higher growth in emerging markets attractive.

Africa’s largest lender, Johannesburg-based Standard Bank this year made $2 billion in loan commitments to Chinese-owned development projects in Africa, and it plans to help Chinese entrepreneurs seek African investment opportunities in areas such as retail. Access to credit remains a challenge for many Africans. Standard Bank says its opportunities lie in working “on the yuan’s internationalization and helping Chinese companies transform from … contractors to investors.”

Oil-importing African countries are showing an improved business environment as the continent endures its slowest growth in more than two decades. In contrast, countries that export commodities are under economic pressure due to low oil prices including three of Africa’s largest economies. Some countries that are doing better are predicted to grow at more than 6 percent. IMF predicts average growth will fall to 1.4 percent in 2016, less than half of 2015 growth.

A pest that earlier this year devastated the Nigerian tomato crop has been detected for the first time in South Africa after hitching a ride from South America to Europe, then spreading to Asia and Africa, Reuters reported. The tomato leaf miner, aka tuta absoluta, can ruin tomato and potato crops, the South African department of agriculture said on Friday. The outbreak was discovered on a tomato farm in eastern South Africa at a border post with neighboring Mozambique in the Kruger National Park.

These days, Chinese arrivals mostly enter Africa as private citizens seeking business opportunities, not as workers for Chinese infrastructure projects. They’re highly adaptable and one result of the massive influx is new Chinatowsn popping up all over Africa. One example is Cyrildene Chinatown in a formerly predominantly Jewish neighborhood. It quickly displaced a century-old downtown Chinatown to become the most concentrated area of Chinese in Southern Africa.

Zimbabwe’s Chinhoyi Caves are considered among the best dive sites in the world. Located in the north of the country near the border with Zambia, they’re known for fantastic visibility. This site is often visited by diving expeditions who do ultra-deep diving. U.S. Navy Divers have reached 135 meters (442 feet), but the actual depth is unknown. Divers must register with a Zimbabwe dive club. As you descend to the main cave, you arrive at Sleeping Pool or Chirorodziva (Pool of the Fallen), with its stunning cobalt blue water.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed two shortlists for major awards over the weekend, including a shortlist of 25 players who are nominated for the 2016 African Player of the Year – Based in Africa award. A total of five players have been selected from South African club side Mamelodi Sundowns, meaning that a fifth of the nominees represent the Pretoria-based team.
