South Africa is practically synonymous with wildlife — you simply cannot leave the country contented without visiting a park or reserve where animals roam. But why not also visit a sanctuary, and contribute to the care and rehabilitation of some of these magnificent creatures?

The question “when is the best time to go on safari in Africa” has almost as many answers as there are parks and reserves on the continent. Though there are some trends — for example, between June and October most places in southern Africa are a sure bet, and most of east Africa is good from June-October and also January-March — there are also major exceptions to these “rules.”

Hundreds of rangers risk their lives every day to save endangered rhinos in South Africa’s Kruger National Park. As poachers get more bold and more heavily armed, the chance of rangers getting involved in armed contact with them has risen from 2% to 40-60% over the last few years. Without the correct training and equipment, their task would be impossible.

Though it’s only three hours from Cape Town, De Hoop Nature Reserve truly feels like it’s in a different universe. 1500 plant species, 260 bird species, and 86 mammals make their home in the reserve, which offers rustic accommodation at various price points.
